The History of Email and Email Design

Email Design. It’s so incredibly easy to take it for granted these days, but let’s just take a moment to imagine a world without emails. It’s a pretty difficult thing to do, right?
It’s no wonder, considering emails have been part of our everyday lives for forty four years! And a large part of our lives at that. To put it in perspective, a recent study showed that there are 3x more email accounts than there are Facebook and Twitter accounts combined! So, email is still very much “Top Dog”. Email is close approaching the half century mark without any signs of slowing down.
It all started back in 1971 when the first electronic mail message was successfully sent. It consisted of nothing more than the top rows of keys on the keyboard: QWERTYUIOP. However, it wasn’t until ten years later, in 1982, that the word ’email’ was first used. Fast forward one more decade and we were sending emails from outer space! Then in the mid-nineties, a phone was invented that could successfully send and receive emails. It’s known as: Simon, The Personal Communicator, and is often considered as the world’s first smart phone.
Now, in the present day, almost 70% of all emails are opened on mobile devices, with 16.8% opened on tablets, and 49.5% of all email opens occurring on smartphones! Check out this infographic below from our friends at Instiller.
