How Apple Ruined the World

I was in a gas station this weekend and saw a note that one of the staff had carefully printed and affixed to the top of their self-serve credit card terminal — you know, the terminal where you slide your card and wait for the cashier to press the Credit or Debit key. The note read “This is Not a Touchscreen”. It makes me wonder how many people have tried pressing buttons on the screen that just weren’t there, wondering why nothing was happening.
I never would have seen a sign like this anywhere as recently as just a few years ago. Apple brought the power of the touch screen to a majority of the households in America, and now we’re ruined. I find myself swiping at the built-in GPS screen in my car. My computer monitor. The screen at the ATM.. Oh, well now that’s touch screen too, so I’m in the clear.
The point is, the introduction of a new technology that took usability to the next level, fostered adoption at an incredible rate. And it’s impacted the way the entire world interacts with technology. That’s setting the bar pretty high.
What could you do, in your world, that would do the same for your target market?
