Designer vs Developer… Which One Do You Need?

Web designer… web developer… po-tay-to, po-tah-to… it’s all the same thing, right? It’s easy to think so since their functions are similar but there are distinct differences. If you are about to embark on a new website project, it’s best that you know what sets one apart from the other.
In essence, designers and developers are two sides of the same coin… or another way to think of them is the “left brain” and the “right brain.”
Web designers (the left brain) focus on the aesthetics of a website. The look and feel, the layout, the text and images, and the color scheme.
Web developers (the right brain) focus on the infrastructure and function of the website. The stuff behind the scenes called “code” that processes all the data, animates the website, and sends us where we need to go when we click links and buttons.

So, which one do I need?

As previously stated, they are two sides of the same coin and by those definitions, one can’t exist without the other. However, depending on your project will determine which one you need.

  • If your existing website functions well in terms of navigation and content but it’s just boring to look at, a designer will help you spice it up a bit.
  • If you are looking to add E-commerce capabilities or integration with other apps, a developer can help you out.
  • If you are starting from scratch or due for a complete website overhaul, you will need both.

Can a Designer develop… or a Developer design?
In short, yes. There are designers and developers that possess the skills to do both. Often a designer will have a developer on their team (and vice versa) to complete a project. Your specific needs will determine which skill set you will need the most.
